I am a parent of a 3rd grader and feel so stupid not knowing how to help him with his math homework. He tries to explain to me how his teacher does it, but to me it does not make any sense. I have 3 problems can someone please answer them for me and work it out so I can see how its done. I would appreciate it so very much. This is due in the morning and he will have to do this before school. I just could not figure out anything until it was time for him to go to bed. Using Mental Math to Add - Use breaking apart to add mentally. #1. 53 + 34 34 = 30 + ? 53 + ? = 83 83 + ? = 87 So, 53 + 34 + 74 #2. 42 + 29 29 = 20 + ? 42 + ? = 62 ? + 9 = 71 So, 42 + 29 = ? #3. 47 + 41 41 = ? + 1 47 + ? = 87 ? + 1 = 88 So, 47 + 41 = ?
